19-year-old ATV driver indicted for manslaughter in fatal DUI crash
A Lauderdale County man is charged with being under the influence of alcohol during an ATV crash that killed a 20-year-old and injured another person.
Ryan Tolliver Johnson, a 19-year-old from Lexington, is indicted on charges of manslaughter and first-degree assault, records show. Johnson is charged in the Sept. 16, 2017 ATV crash that killed Samuel Newton, according to court documents. The 20-year-old Newton was among five people who were riding on a Polaris Ranger when it turned over in a field off Lauderdale County Road 86, according to authorities. The crash happened just north of Rogersville during the early morning hours.
Johnson was driving the two-seat ATV on which five people were riding, said Lt. Brad Potts, a sheriff’s office investigator. Potts said Johnson told authorities he was going to do a “doughnut,” but the ATV turned over on its side.
