MAN CHARGED WITH DUI CONVICTED TWICE BEFORE ON SAME CHARGE

WAAY 31 learned a man accused of driving under the influence early this morning was already a repeat offender.

He was convicted twice before.

Samuel Taylor, 44, is accused of hitting a car carrying four other people and sending all of them to Huntsville Hospital, and then slamming into a fence early this morning.

The wreck happened in South Huntsville on Bailey Cove Road right between Chesterfield Road and Gallop Drive.

WAAY 31 learned if he’s convicted again, and hit prior DUI’s won’t play a role in his sentence.

He was sentenced in Decatur and Auburn for driving under the influence, according to his driving record.

The look-back law is something WAAY 31 started telling you about a year and a half ago.

City judges recuse from Huntsville councilman’s DUI case

The judges in Huntsville’s municipal court won’t hear the criminal case against Councilman Will Culver, who was arrested over the weekend on a DUI charge.

Culver was to be arraigned this morning in city court, but Presiding Judge Lonzo Robinson recused all local judges from the case. An out-of-town judge will be appointed.

Culver wasn’t present for this morning’s hearing. His attorney George Flowers filed a written waiver of arraignment. At an arraignment charges are read to the suspect, who pleads guilty or not guilty.

Culver was arrested early Sunday morning on Oakwood Avenue near Brandon Town Road, Huntsville police said today. A spokesman said he wasn’t allowed to answer questions about the circumstances of the arrest.

Huntsville councilman charged with DUI, booked into Madison County Jail

Huntsville Councilman Will Culver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Sunday morning, according to Madison County Jail records.

The 57-year-old, who represents Huntsville’s District 5, was booked into the jail at 2:26 a.m. Sunday and was still incarcerated as of 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the records show.

A former Huntsville police officer and chief city magistrate, Culver was also charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, failure to signal and improper lane change/usage, according to the jail records.

Huntsville police officer jailed on DUI charge following weekend crash

A Huntsville police officer is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after being involved in a crash this past weekend, authorities said.

Curtis Mitchell, a 22-year-old policeman, was arrested on a DUI warrant today by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Mitchell has been released from the Madison County Jail on $1,000 bail.

Mitchell was driving a 2008 Honda CRV that collided with a truck on Wall Triana Highway just north of the Madison city limits, said state trooper spokesman Curtis Summerville. The crash happened Saturday around 4 a.m. Mitchell was off duty and driving his personal car, Huntsville police officials said.

Suspect charged in DUI crash that killed man, sent 3 others to the hospital

A Huntsville man is charged with manslaughter in an early-morning 2017 crash that killed one person and sent three others to the hospital.

Derrick Lamont Chandler is accused of being under the influence of alcohol during the Nov. 5 fatal crash in north Huntsville, authorities said. Chandler, a 47-year-old from Huntsville, was booked into the Madison County Jail this past weekend. He was released today on $30,000 bail.

Chandler was driving under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on Meridian Street, police said. The crash happened that Sunday around 1:30 a.m. at the corner of Delaware Boulevard, near Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
