Tuscaloosa County man sentenced in fatal DUI crash

A Tuscaloosa County man who was driving drunk when he crashed on Interstate 359, killing his girlfriend, will serve five years in prison.

Jeffrey Caleb Hoggle, 25, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2015 death of Catherine Virgona in October. Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court Judge James Roberts sentenced him Wednesday to a 20-year sentence, with five years to be served in prison and the rest on probation.

Hoggle will be required to undergo alcohol abuse treatment while in prison and once he is released.

“We are certainly appreciative of the time the judge took to make a decision in this case,” said Tuscaloosa County Deputy District Attorney Paula Hearing. “This is just another example of why you shouldn’t drink and drive. The lives of two families are changed forever. One young person is gone and another is going to prison.”

The district attorney’s office asked the judge to sentence Hoggle to serve the full 20 years in prison.
